Depends on routes. All vertical clearances are the responsibility of the permit
holder. TRUCK FLAGS, SIGNS & LIGHTS Warning flags required for oversize movement:
Red or orange warning flags shall be displayed on all oversized vehicles or loads.
Flags shall be a minimum of 18" by 18". Flags shall be attached to all of the corners
of a vehicle or load if the vehicle or load is wider than 8'6" and to all of the
corners of any load that extends beyond the width of the bed of the hauling vehicle.
Flags shall be attached to all oversized loads that project more than three feet
ahead of the vehicle's front bumper or more than four feet beyond the rear of the
bed of a vehicle. One flag shall be attached. to load if the end projection is two
feet wide or less. Two flags, one on each corner of the projection, if the end of
the projection is wider than two feet. Warning signs front and rear required for
oversize movement: Warning signs shall be displayed on oversized vehicles or loads
that exceed a length of 95 feet or a width of 12'. "WIDE LOAD" or "OVERSIZED
LOAD" signs on all vehicles longer than 95 feet but 12 feet wide or less. One
sign visible to traffic from the rear shall be mounted on the rear of the load or
vehicle. If the vehicle is hauling a load that has a rear overhang, the rear sign
shall be attached to the extreme end of the load. If the sign cannot be attached
to or is not legible on the load, the sign shall be attached to the rear of the
vehicle. Warning signs must be legible at 500 feet. Signs must be reflectorized
for night moves. Signs shall be 18" high by 84" wide, yellow with black letters
which are 10 inches high, with 1 3/8" brush strokes. Lighting required for oversized
movements during nighttime hours and other times required refer to section 70:03:01:14.02.

Movement There is certain restrictions on time of movement that apply to this section
70:03:01:07 in Hand Book. You can move at night up to 10' wide but there are other
restrictions such as other combinations of length and height. Call Pierre, SD 605-773-3571. ESCORT REQUIREMENTS Vehicle and load over 16' wide one front on
two-lane or one in rear on divided highways. Over 20' wide traveling on the state
highway system require an Escort. The permit-issuing authority may also require
Escort vehicles because of route limitations, traffic conditions, or unusual permit
vehicle configuration conditions. ESCORT VEHICLE REQUIREMENTS Escort vehicles must be licensed motor vehicles.
Motorcycles may not serve as Escort vehicles. Escort vehicles must display a revolving
amber Light or two two-way flashing amber Lights. The Lights must be at least four
inches in diameter. Escort vehicles must have signs with wording such as "WIDE
LOAD AHEAD" or "WIDE LONG LOAD" in letters at least 12" high. The sign
"WIDE LONG LOAD" shall be mounted on the front of the leading Escort vehicle
and the sign "WIDE LOAD AHEAD" shall be mounted on the back of the trailing
Escort vehicle. Bright red or orange flags at least 12" square shall be mounted
on brackets or standards on each side of the signs. TRAVEL TIME Restrictions for Sunrise to Sunset on width only. Overlength, overheight, overweight can run 24 hours by special permit. Saturday and Sunday, Sunrise to Sunset. Travel is not restricted during holidays. The State Permit Office will be closed on the following: New Year's Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. All four major ports of entry are open 24 hours. CURFEW Black Hills area - when load exceeds width of 10' one front Escort required. The Black Hills area is that area south and west of Interstate Highway 90 from the Wyoming state line to Rapid City, west of State Trunk Highway 79 from Rapid City to the junction of State Trunk Highway 79 and US Highway 18, west of US Highway 18 from the junction of State Trunk Highway 79 and US Highway 18 to Oelrichs, and west of US Highway 385 from Oelrichs to the Nebraska state line. | |||||
