TRUCK OVER DIMENSIONAL PERMIT LIMITATIONS

The department makes decisions on every vehicle that exceeds the legal limit. Weight: 5 Axles - 120,000 Lbs; 6 Axles- 130,000 Lbs; 7 Axles - 165,000 Lbs; 8 Axles - 200,000 Lbs. Gross Weight: 5, 6, 7, 8 Axles - Determined by spacing, weight and routing.

Length, Width, & Height: No set maximum. Determined by routes and dimensions.

TRUCK FLAGS, SIGNS & LIGHTS

Wording for the signs will be "Oversize Load". For the load vehicle the sign will not be less than 7' long and 18" high. The letters must be black on yellow background. The letters must be at least 10" high with 1 1/4" brush strokes. A sign will be placed on the front of the load vehicle and on the end of the load. The location of the sign for Escort vehicle will be front or rear of vehicle as appropriate. All warning flags will be both red or orange fluorescent and at least 18" square. Overwidth vehicles require at least two flags and up to six flags to be mounted at the widest extremity of the load and on the 4 corners of the load. They must be kept clean to distinguish color. 4' overhang - 2 flags on each corner. Travel with head lights on low beam.

ESCORT REQUIREMENTS

No Escort is required on width less than 12'. Rear Escort required on loads between 12' and 14'6" wide. Front and rear Escorts required on loads over 14'6" wide. No Escort required on loads less than 80' long. One Escort required on loads between 80' to 90' long. Two Escorts required on loads over 90' long. One Escort required if overhang is greater than 15'. Over 14' high, one escort with height pole. One 2-lane highway if over 12' wide - 2 Escorts

ESCORT VEHICLE REQUIREMENTS

Escort vehicles will be at least the size of a compact car or larger. The drivers of Escorts will maintain visual and two-way radio contact at all times. Escort vehicles shall have yellow Lights in operation above the highest point of the vehicle and be visible from the front and rear. Escort vehicles will also travel with low beam headlights on at all times. Escort vehicle oversize load sign shall be on the front or rear whichever is applicable for vehicle/load.

TRAVEL TIME & CURFEW

 Travel is permitted one-half hour before Sunrise until one-half hour after Sunset. Travel is prohibited on the following holidays: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Victory Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. If a holiday falls on Sunday, the following Monday is also restricted as a holiday. If the holiday falls on Saturday, the previous Friday is restricted as a holiday after 12:00 noon. If a holiday falls during the week, travel is allowed up to 12:00 noon on the day before the holiday. The State Permit Office will be closed on the mentioned holidays as well as Martin Luther King Day, and Election Day, but travel will not be restricted on these additional days. Rhode Island restrictions - Red Routes prohibit only moves over 12 feet wide between 7:00 - 9:00 a.m. and after 3:30 p.m. on Multi-State permit maps and provision sheet. No weekend travel.
