TRUCK OVER DIMENSIONAL PERMIT LIMITATIONS

Weight: Single-20,000 Lbs, Tandem-34,000 Lbs, Tridum-42,000 Lbs, Quad all depends upon axle spacing and routes. Gross Weight: 5 Axles - 92,000 Lbs, 70' axle spacing; 6 Axles - 96,000 Lbs, 70' axles spacing; 7 Axles -101,000 Lbs, 70' axle spacing; 8 Axles -106,000 Lbs, 70' axle spacing.

Length: No set maximum. Each trip is looked at individually. If over 1O5', Escort car will be required.

Width: 17'

Height: 16'

Trip permits are reviewed on an individual basis only (length, width, height). Loads 17' wide or greater and 16' high and greater require special approval. If load exceeds any of these dimensions or weights refer to the State on Super Loads.

 

AMBER LIGHT LAW

It is unlawful for any person to mount flashing amber warning lights permanently on a vehicle without a permit from the Nevada highway patrol. The Nevada highway patrol, upon written application, shall issue a permit to mount a flashing amber light on a towing permitted vehicle and Escort vehicle.

 

TRUCK SIGNS & FLAGS & LIGHTS

All loads or vehicles in excess of 8'6" wide must display "Oversize Load" or "Wide Load" signs front and rear. When a wide load is transported the signs shall be promptly removed upon completion of work. The minimum size warning signs shall be 7' by 18" sign with not less than 10" black letters of 1 5/8" minimum stroke on yellow background. Warning signs shall be neat, clean and mounted securely. Signs shall be displayed only when necessary and "Oversize Load" shall have precedence over other signs in questions of which to use. Any vehicle/load combination of legal width but exceeding 105' in length will require "Long Load" signs. Lights while traveling during hours of darkness are required. An oversized or overweight vehicle that travels during hours of darkness must display: On the extreme front at least two amber, steady-burning lights visible from a distance of at least 500 feet; On each side of the vehicle near the middle or toward the front and amber, steady-burning light visible from a distance of at least 500 feet and if the vehicle has an overhang of at least 4', two red, steady-burning lights which are placed in a manner to identify the maximum width of the overhang visible from a distance of at least 500 feet.

 

FLAGMEN, PILOT CAR ESCORT REQUIREMENTS

When it is necessary to post a flagman in order to warn and direct approaching traffic, each flagman must be wearing a red jacket or vest and equipped with a red flag and paddle reading "STOP" in white letters with red background. Flagman may not be less than 18 years of age and must be capable of carrying out the flagging responsibilities. Pilot cars when required by the permit must be furnished by the permittee. A pilot car must have a minimum width of 60 inches and a minimum wheelbase of 95 inches, and be no larger than a 1 1/2 ton truck and display appropriate warning signs. Signs must be removed promptly upon completion of Escort duty. Flashing Lights when specified on the permit must meet the requirements of the Nevada highway patrol. The interval to be maintained between a pilot car and Escorted vehicle or vehicle combination is: Mountain roads, 300' minimum, 600 ' maximum; Rural areas, 600' minimum, 1,000 feet maximum; and Urban areas, 100' minimum, 200' maximum.

Pilot cars: If the overhang of the load exceeds 25 feet in front, a front pilot car is required for such a load. If the overhang of a load exceeds 25 feet behind, a rear pilot car is required for such a load. If the height of a load exceeds 15' 6", one (1) pilot car is required in the lead with a clearance pole for such a load. If the length of a load exceeds 1O5' and travel is on a 2-lane or4-lane highway, one (1) rear pilot car is required for such a load. If the width of a load exceeds 12 feet but is not more than 14 feet and travel is on a 2-lane highway, one (1) front pilot car is required for such a load. If the width of a load exceeds 14' but is not more than 16 feet and travel is on a 2-lane highway, one (1) front pilot car is required and one (1) rear pilot car is required for such a load. If travel is on a 4-lane highway, one (1) rear pilot car is required for such a load. If the width of a load exceeds 16' but is not more than 17' and travel is on a 2-lane highway, one (1) pilot car is required in the front is required and one (1) rear pilot car is required for such a load. If travel is on a 4-lane highway, one (1) front pilot car is required and one (1) rear pilot car is required for such a load. If the width of a load exceeds 17 feet, pilot cars will be required for such a load in an amount determined by the department. It is the responsibility of the permittee to ensure that pilot car vehicles, operators or flagmen employed to carry out the provisions of the permit are properly equipped and briefed as to their responsibilities prior to the movement. Failure of the pilot car operators and flagmen to comply with this section with proper warning and directing traffic is considered a violation of the terms of the permit. If the provisions of a permit require a flagmen to warn and direct approaching traffic, the flagmen must: Be at least 18 yrs of age. Wear appropriate protective clothing, including, without limitation, a vest which is constructed of solid, fluorescent yellow-green material and which completely covers the flagmen's torso and be equipped with a stop & slow sign.

 

TRAVEL TIME

Daylight hours are defined as one half hour before sunrise and one half hour after sunset. The following holidays must be observed and permits will not be issued for the movement of mobile homes, modular homes and not be issued for the movement of mobile homes, modular homes and houses if they exceed 10 feet in width and other loads that are oversized in width or length on these days: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Day, President's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Admission Day, Veterans' Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and any day that may be designated by the President of the United States or the governor for a public fast, thanksgiving or holiday.
