TRUCK OVERDIMENSIONAL PERMIT LIMITATIONS

Weight: Single - 25,000 Lbs; Tandem - 50,000 Lbs; Tridum-70,000 Lbs and Quad-85,000 Lbs. Gross Weight: 5 Axles -130,000 Lbs; 6 Axles -140,000 Lbs; 7 Axles -150,000 Lbs; 8 Axles -150,000 Lbs goes to bridge division. Any load over 13'6" high, a route survey will be done by the Bridge Dept. or a civilian Escort may do the route survey with height pole when the state deems it necessary. If the trip can be completed safely, the Department will issue the permit. If load exceeds any of these dimensions or weights refer to the State on Super Loads. Loads of 150,000 Lbs will go to the review and will need a diagram showing axle, number of tires, spacing’s, tire width and anticipated axle weights.

TRUCK SIGNS & FLAGS

Warning signs shall be displayed on the front of the hauling vehicle and on the rear of the hauling vehicle of load whichever provides best rear display. It shall read "Oversize Load". The sign shall be 7' wide, 18" high with 10" high black letters of 1" brush strokes on yellow background. Flags are required on all oversize vehicles. Flags should be fluorescent red or orange and be at least 18" square. Flags should be mounted on all extremities of the load.

 

ESCORT REQUIREMENTS

One (1) Escort for overall width of 12'0" or more is required. No Escort for less than 80', one (1) Escort required for 80'0" or more in length. No Escort required if overhang is less than 15', one (1) required if overhang is 15'0" or more. A second Escort vehicle shall be required under circumstances involving excessive overhang and overwidth. On a 2-lane, undivided highway, Two (2) Escorts shall be required when the overhang is 15'0" or more to the rear, and where the width is 12' 0" or more. On an interstate in instances of overwidth with overhang in excess of 15'0", a second Escort vehicle shall be required. The applicant shall furnish one (1) Escort vehicle equipped with an operating top-mounted, flashing or rotating amber Light for all loads, including hauling vehicle, 12'0" or more in width or 80'0" in length. A state police Escort shall be required when load, including hauling vehicle, exceeds 18'0" in width. In instances of overlength only of 100'0" or more, a state police Escort shall be required unless exempted from this requirement by state police due to determination that weather conditions are optimum, visibility is not impaired, traffic flow is not heavy or other conditions which shall not compromise safe movement. Escort vehicles preceding oversize loads shall display a warning sign affixed to the front with legend reading "Oversize Load". The Escort following the load will affix an oversize load sign to rear. Signs shall have 10" high black letters of a 1" brushstroke on a yellow background and signs shall be made of durable material unaffected by moisture; shape of the sign may be varied to fit the Escort vehicle but shall not be less then 5'0" wide and 12" high.

 

ESCORT VEHICLE REQUIREMENTS & SIGNS

Escort vehicle shall be equipped with an operating top mounted flashing or rotating amber Lights. The pilot car shall precede the permit load on all highways except on 4-lane divided highways when it should follow the load. Escort vehicle shall be required to drive with headlights turned on in the low beam position and will be no smaller than a compact size automobile or pickup truck. Signs shall have 10" high black letters of a 1" brushstroke on a yellow background and shall be made of durable material unaffected by moisture. Shape of the sign may be varied to fit the escort vehicle.

 

TRAVEL TIME

Travel is permitted one-half hour before Sunrise to one-half hour after Sunset. No weekend travel. Travel is prohibited on the following days: New Year's Day, Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. If a holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday shall be considered the holiday. If it falls on a Saturday the previous Friday shall be considered the holiday. The State Permit Office will be closed on the above-mentioned holidays as well as the day after Thanksgiving, but travel will not be restricted on this additional day.
