TRUCK OVER DIMENSIONAL PERMIT LIMITATIONS
There is a 14' width and 13' 6" height limit on Maine Turnpike, and an 18' width limit on Interstate 95. Weight: Single-25,000 Lbs; Tandem-50,000 Lbs; Tridum-75,000 Lbs; Quad-100,000 Lbs. Gross weight: 5 Axles-130,000 Lbs; 6 Axles-140,000 Lbs; 7 Axles-167,000 Lbs. Length:125'. Width: 16'. Any vehicle or load over 8'6" requires a permit. Height: 16'
SUPER LOADS
Super Loads must submit vehicle configuration with axle spacing and weights. All loads over 167,000 Lbs require special approval.
TRUCK SIGNS, FLAGS, RADIO & LIGHTS
SIGNS: "OVERSIZE LOAD" in 10" high black letters on yellow background; 7' wide by 18" high; Front and rear; when your load is not oversize remove or cover sign. FLAGS: 4-18"x18" red or fluorescent orange; Position at extreme corners. RADIO: (if accompanied by pilot(s): Two-way mobile; One-half mile radius range; Escort is responsible for State Police escort communication between load and state police vehicle(s) when permit requires police escorts. LIGHTS: Headlights on low beam; Flashing, rotary, light bar, amber lights on top of cab.
ESCORT VEHICLE REQUIREMENTS AND PROEDURES FOR ESCORTING OVER DIMENSIONAL LOADS
Pilot vehicles will be required at the width of 12' or more. State Police Escorts may be required when the issuing authority deems it necessary on extreme widths, heights, and weights. Not withstanding, upon petition and review, the Secretary of State, after consulting with the Commissioner of Transportation, may waive or modify the Rule on the necessity of requiring Pilot vehicles or may deem it necessary to use both. Loads 16' and over in width must have a police escort. Loads exceed 75' length. Loads 125' and over in length a police escort is required and 16' wide. Pilot vehicles shall be required for any vehicle or combination of vehicles having a length of 80' or more up to 125', or a width of 12' or more up to 16'. The need for pilot vehicles shall be determined by the Secretary of State acting upon advice of the Commissioner of Transportation. Pilot vehicles shall be equipped and operated as follows: VEHICLE: Pick-up truck or automobile; Mirrors-Interior, Right outside, Left outside. SPECIAL LIGHTING: 2 intermittent flashing amber lights at least 6" in dia. or 2 rotary type amber lights at least 4" in dia. or a light bar of sufficient length and width to accommodate a min. of 4 amber flashing or strobe lights or combination thereof. The lights must be attached to the roof of the vehicle, one on the extreme left and the other on the extreme right. The light bar must be located on the roof perpendicular to the length of the vehicle. SIGNS: "OVERSIZE LOAD" in black 10" high letters on yellow background; 5' wide x 12" high; Rear bumper when following load; Front bumper when preceding load; Roof mounted is an option with sign facing appropriate direction; remove or cover signs when not in escort service. RADIO: Two-way mobile radio with one-half mile radius. DRIVER: Minimum age 18 years and at least 2 yrs. driving experience. Position of single pilot vehicle: On a divided highway to the rear of the load; on an undivided highway to the front of the load. Pilot vehicle drivers must be familiar with the rules regarding the outfitting and use of the pilot vehicles. To obtain a copy of rules call the Commercial Vehicle Center. Revised 4-04. TRAVEL TIME
Travel Permitted one half hour before Sunrise to one-half hour after Sunset. Travel permitted Saturday one-half hour before Sunrise to one-half hour after Sunset except during the months of July and August. The movements of loads exceeding the legal limits are now permitted to move on SATURDAYS & SUNDAYS throughout the year except during the months of JULY and AUGUST. The following days the overdimensional/overweight loads are prohibited to travel in the state of Maine: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving Day, Thanksgiving Friday and Christmas Day. Mobile homes and modular units 11 '6" to 13'6" wide (including 13'6") are excluded from moving Saturdays & Sundays; Mobile homes and modular units over 13'6" to 14'6" wide (including 14'6") are excluded from moving Friday afternoons, Saturdays, & Sundays and Mobile homes over 14'6" wide can only move on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays.
TRAVELTIME FOR TURNPIKE
Oversize loads may travel on the Maine Turnpike from 1/2 hour before sunrise until 1/2 hours after sunset (daylight hours), except for Friday afternoons, Saturdays, Sundays & holidays. NIGHT MOVES AND STATE POLICE ONLY MOVES
Night moves (sunset to sunrise) as defined in Title 29 - A Section 101 sub section 78 may be authorized by any Maine State Police Troop Commander for travel as such times and places, check with state police. | |||||
