Over 16' cannot use interstate.

We are no longer using the metric system on permit sizes.

Height: 16' if load exceeds any of these dimensions or weights refer to the state on Super Loads.
Anything over 90,000 needs bridge study.

Super Loads

Loads over 150,000 lbs., 16' wide, 16' high, or 150' long, will require special approval.
Drawings are required and should include axle weights and spacing.
Loads exceeding 150,000 lbs. are subject to structure analysis if bridges are to be crossed.

Truck Sign & Flags

A sign shall be mounted on the front and rear of any over width or over length vehicle or combination of vehicles and loads.
Sign shall be 7' wide, 18" high, with black letters 10" high, with a 1-5/8" brush stroke on yellow or orange background, with the wording "Oversize Load".
Red flags must be 18" square, placed on all four corners of all over dimensional vehicles.

Escort Requirements

Front Escort is required for loads over 16' high with height pole. Front and rear Escort when load exceeds 12' wide. Escorts may be required for less heights. Rear Escort on mobile homes may be replaced with two (2) 5" flashing amber Lights. Rear Escort required over 76' long. Front and rear Escorts required over 105' long. Rear Escort required if overhang exceeds 5' to the rear or 10' to the front. Front Escort required if front overhang exceeds 10'. There are special Escort requirements for bulldozers and other construction equipment being transported with blade intact. For more information call Alabama DOT.

Escort Vehicle Requirements

Escort vehicle shall be a pickup truck or a passenger automobile, carryall or station wagon.
An Escort vehicle must be equipped with a flashing or revolving amber Light.
The Escort vehicles must be able to contact each other and the permitted vehicle or combination of vehicles and load by radio.
Signs mounted on Escort vehicles shall be modified to fit the Escort vehicle.

Travel Time and Weekend Travel

One-half hour before Sunrise to one-half hour after Sunset. Travel is allowed all day Saturday, and no Sunday travel. Loads 120' to 150' in length are restricted from 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM Monday through Friday. Travel is prohibited on the following holidays: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. The State Permit Office will be closed on the above-mentioned holidays as well as Martin Luther King Day, Lincoln's Birthday, Washington's Birthday, Good Friday, Columbus Day and Veteran's Day. Travel will not be restricted on these additional days.
